Built on a series of lagoons and islands, the beautiful resort of El Gouna has been likened to 'Venice of the Red Sea', and has been carefully constructed to complement the setting of desert, mountain and Red Sea in which it is based. El Gouna is about 30 minutes north of Hurghada, the area's biggest resort.
Holidays in El Gouna offer guests a myriad of leisure options - a marina, shops and arcades, a selection of restaurants, cafes and bars, an 18 hole USPGA Championship golf course and go-kart track, as well as a range of watersports. Resort facilities also include a private airport and a hospital, with a Hyperbaric
chamber for divers.

Customer comments on El Gouna
"El Gouna is a fabulous resort packed with facilities and amenities for either an action-packed or relaxed holiday. The resort is safe and hassle free with good transport links. The Marina was a particular favourite destination to eat and relax with no pressure to buy goods. We are really pleased we chose El Gouna!!" - A Murray, Merseyside
"The planners have worked hard to develop El Gouna so that it has the intimate atmosphere usually found in the Med. It has been very quiet here in Feb but I expect that it would be a great place to walk around and rest in bars & restaurants in the summer. I have particularly enjoyed walking around the town, it is so safe, interesting and fun crossing from island to island on the many different bridges." - C McLean, Cambridgeshire
Green Gouna
Green Gouna, an El Gouna community initiative, has been established since January 2003 and involves all the dive centres, hotels and many outlets. The goals of Green Gouna are to help develop the resort as an ecotourism destination. Green Gouna pursues this goal by involving the entire community in the protection and preservation of the delicate Red Sea and El Gouna environments through education, recycling, clean-up campaigns, festivals and the establishment and the enforcement of environmental standards and guidelines.
Environmental Initiatives
- There is an ongoing push in El Gouna to eradicate the use of plastic bags, replacing them with recyclable paper bags or other re-usable materials.
Installation of recycling bins for glass, paper, plastic and cans in El Gouna.
- Conservation awareness campaigns directed to staff, residents and visitors.
- Establishment of an educational photo gallery on El Gouna wildlife.
- Installation and maintenance of mooring systems for diving boats in cooperation with the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA).
Environmental Guidelines Help us preserve the natural beauty of El Gouna by observing the following rules:
- Don't pick up shells, not even the empty ones on the beach
- Don't touch the mangrove trees
- Don't touch, feed, or catch fish or crabs
- Don't touch or step on the coral; take care when snorkelling
- Don't throw litter in the sea or anywhere else
- Don't buy souvenirs made of shells or animal products – most of which are illegal to import/export
- Motor-operated cars and bikes are not allowed on the beach.
The area is characterised by sandy beaches and ideal conditions for a variety of watersports, including a year-round sea breeze that also makes these resorts slightly cooler in high summer than their sister Red Sea resorts on the Sinai.
