Holidays in El Gouna

Built on a series of lagoons and islands, the beautiful resort of El Gouna has been likened to 'Venice of the Red Sea', and has been carefully constructed to complement the setting of desert, mountain and Red Sea in which it is based.

El Gouna is about 30 minutes north of Hurghada, the area's biggest resort.

Holidays in El Gouna offer guests a myriad of leisure options - a marina, shops and arcades, a selection of restaurants, cafes and bars, an 18 hole USPGA Championship golf course and go-kart track, as well as a range of watersports.

Resort facilities also include a private airport and a hospital, with a Hyperbaric chamber for divers.

Dining

Gourmet aficionados will be pleased by the variety and excellence offered by El Gouna's many restaurants and cafés. From European cuisine and Oriental specialities, to a fabulous array of fresh seafood - it’s all hard to resist.

El Gouna operates a 'dine-around' scheme, which allows guests staying on half board or full board basis to sample a variety of different restaurants around the resort, where they receive a set amount of credit towards their meal.

Sports & Leisure

Countless opportunities for exercise and fresh-air fun are scattered throughout El Gouna to satisfy every age group and every inclination. Relax and enjoy high standards of equipment, friendly and professional assistance, and one of the most beautiful sites on the Red Sea. From fully equipped gyms and exquisite spas to speeding on a Go-kart track - the choice is yours. Golfers can enjoy a round of golf, improve their putting or just relax in the greenery of the golf course.

Sail La Vie - New sailing school

Sail La Vie is the newest recruit to the Red Sea town of El Gouna offering sailing and windsurfing lessons to holidaymakers. With the tag line "Real Boaters, Don't Need Motors", the school is based next to the Sheraton Miramar and teaches holidaymakers how to command the crystal clear warm waters on a range of water vessels.

Examples of the tuition courses include a two hour windsurfing course which costs just 30€ (£25) per person and a two hour sailing course costing just 60€ (£50) per person.
Families can also get out on the water as a group with sailing tuition for children aged seven and up starting from 30€ (£25) per hour.
Experienced windsurfers and sailors can rent a range of equipment and boats at competitive rates starting from just 15€ (£12.50) per hour.

If holidaymakers would prefer to chill-out, relax and let someone else do the sailing for them, Sail La Vie run trips which include soft drinks and snacks and start from just 25€ (£21) per person for a two hour trip, 35€ (£30) for a four hour trip and 60€ (£50) for a six hour sail.

Bookings and enquiries can be made to sail_lavie@yahoo.com or call +201001081505.

Customer comments on El Gouna

"El Gouna is a fabulous resort packed with facilities and amenities for either an action-packed or relaxed holiday. The resort is safe and hassle free with good transport links.

The Marina was a particular favourite destination to eat and relax with no pressure to buy goods. We are really pleased we chose El Gouna!!"

- A Murray, Merseyside

"The planners have worked hard to develop El Gouna so that it has the intimate atmosphere usually found in the Med.

It has been very quiet here in Feb but I expect that it would be a great place to walk around and rest in bars & restaurants in the summer.

I have particularly enjoyed walking around the town, it is so safe, interesting and fun crossing from island to island on the many different bridges."

- C McLean, Cambridgeshire

About the South Coast Area

Across the Red Sea, east of the Sinai Peninsula, are a number of resorts on mainland Egypt. These include Hurghada, El Gouna, El Quseir, Abu Soma and Soma Bay and Marsa Alam.

The area is characterised by sandy beaches and ideal conditions for a variety of watersports, including a year-round sea breeze that also makes these resorts slightly cooler in high summer than their sister Red Sea resorts on the Sinai.

The region enjoys comparatively easy access to Luxor, and these resorts make an ideal second, relaxing destination after a Nile Cruise or sight-filled stay in Luxor (see multi-centre & tailor-made holidays).

Green Gouna

“I don’t believe it is right to develop land without regard for the environment, and it’s not fair to ruin it for future generations.”
Samih Sawiris, Chairman Orascom Development

El Gouna has been officially recognized as Egypt's most environmentally-friendly holiday destination, with the Ministry of Tourism in Egypt referring to El Gouna as “becoming one of the world’s top green destinations by end of 2011.” With this in mind, El Gouna management has worked hard in cooperation with local hotels, businesses, residents and visitors to maintain, protect, and preserve its unique environment. The town’s environmental programs and grassroots environmental organization paved the way for several awards, including the Green Globe.

Green Gouna, an El Gouna community initiative, was established in January 2003 and involves dive centres, hotels and many outlets. The goals of Green Gouna are to help develop the resort as an ecotourism destination. Green Gouna pursues this goal by involving the entire community in the protection and preservation of the delicate Red Sea and El Gouna environments through education, recycling, clean-up campaigns, festivals and the establishment and the enforcement of environmental standards and guidelines.

Environmental Guidelines
Help us preserve the natural beauty of El Gouna by observing the following rules:

- Don't pick up shells, not even the empty ones on the beach

- Don't touch the mangrove trees

- Don't touch, feed, or catch fish or crabs

- Don't touch or step on the coral; take care when snorkelling

- Don't throw litter in the sea or anywhere else

- Don't buy souvenirs made of shells or animal products – most of which are illegal to import/export

- Motor-operated cars and bikes are not allowed on the beach.

Environmental Initiatives

- Campaign to replace plastic bags with recyclable paper bags or other re-usable materials.

- Installation of recycling bins for glass, paper, plastic and cans in El Gouna.

- Establishment of an educational photo gallery on El Gouna wildlife.

- Installation and maintenance of mooring systems for diving boats in cooperation with the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA).
